This cross combines two premium Thai lines for a single purpose: hyper-compact form with intense reddish-charcoal skin pigmentation. Super Red brings the fiery, dark reddish-bronze coloration and heavy branching. DDC (Desert Diamond Compact) brings the extreme compactness, low-slung shield caudex, and short internodes. Together, expect an ultra-dense dwarf with some of the most striking skin tone in the collection.

FULL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Adenium arabicum 'Super Red' × 'DDC' is a deliberate pairing of two specialist genetic strengths. DDC — Desert Diamond Compact, sometimes folded into Petch Ban Na or classic Dwarf House Adenium breeding — is celebrated for extreme compactness and a flat, low shield caudex. Crossed with Super Red's heavy branching and fiery anthocyanin pigmentation, the goal is a hyper-compact dwarf with intense, weathered red-charcoal skin.

The "Red-Charcoal" Skin Shift
The standout trait of this cross is skin tone. Super Red's intense maroon pigments blend with DDC's clean, dark-silvery skin, and under strong light-stress, seedlings often develop a rich, weathered dark coppery-brown or "chocolate-cherry" epidermis unlike either parent line alone.

Hyper-Squat, Shield Caudex
DDC's influence shows up strongly in resistance to vertical stretch — these plants naturally form a flat, wide, pancake-like or domed caudex sitting close to the soil line.

Crowded, Miniature Canopy
DDC's hyper-short internodes combine with Super Red's high branch count to produce tiny, stubby, finger-like branches exploding right from the caudex shoulders — an exceptionally crowded, compact canopy with no pinching required.

Foliage
Compact, thick, teardrop-shaped leaves, often retaining a fine velvety pubescence, clustering tightly at the short branch tips.

This is an F1 cross grown from hand-pollinated seed, not a stabilized line — every seedling is genetically unique, and you'll see a spread of trait expression across a batch. A strong percentage will show the compact DDC-influenced form, with skin tone landing anywhere from dark coppery-brown to deeper chocolate-cherry depending on individual genetics and how much light stress each plant gets.

Zone 6 Notes
Color on this cross is entirely light-dependent, same as straight Super Red — anything less than maximum direct sun and these seedlings revert to plain compact green instead of the red-charcoal tone you're growing them for. I keep mine in lean, high-inorganic media (80–90% pumice, akadama, small lava rock) to lock in the flat DDC-influenced phenotype and prevent soft, leggy growth. Shallow, wide clay or ceramic pots early on match the lateral, flat footprint this cross wants to take. Outside in full sun after May 15, indoors before first hard frost in mid-October, standard arabicum dormancy through winter.
