Choose a Desert Oasis Seasonal Top Dress

Our seasonal top-dress blends allow growers to adjust the root-zone environment throughout the growing season without completely repotting established plants.

Spring Top Dress — Early-season support as active growth begins.

Summer Top Dress — Designed for the heat and increased watering demands of peak growing season.

Fall Top Dress — A 100% inorganic surface amendment designed for the transition toward dormancy. Cherry Stone quartzite grit, pumice, and lava rock form a protective mineral surface layer without encouraging late-season growth.

Ideal season: Fall transition → Before dormancy

Cold climates (Zones 5–7): Typically mid-September through early-to-mid October, before nighttime lows regularly fall below 55°F.
Warmer climates: Follow your local seasonal transition rather than the calendar. In regions such as Texas, Florida, Southern California and the Southwest, the application window may occur considerably later.

WHY DESERT OASIS?

FAST DRAINAGE

Adenium and other caudiciforms need moisture—but they should not remain in stagnant, waterlogged media. Desert Oasis formulations emphasize drainage and pore space to help growers maintain a healthier root-zone environment.

ROOT-ZONE AERATION

Roots need oxygen. Our mineral-forward approach helps maintain structure and air space around the root system rather than relying on dense, moisture-retentive mixes designed for conventional houseplants.

PURPOSE-BUILT FORMULATIONS

There isn't one perfect growing mix for every stage of a plant's life. Germinating a seed has different requirements than maintaining a mature Adenium. Spring dormancy transition presents different challenges than peak summer growth, and fall requires a different approach again as plants slow down and prepare for dormancy.

That's why Desert Oasis is a system of stage- and season-specific growing media, not simply one bag of soil.

These aren't generic houseplant mixes with a different label. Desert Oasis Media was developed around the cultural requirements of plants such as Adenium, Plumeria, Pachypodium, and other drought-adapted plants grown in containers.

WHY I CREATED DESERT OASIS

I've spent more than 30 years growing tropical and desert plants in a cold climate.

Growing Adenium in Northern Kentucky presents very different challenges from growing them in warmer regions such as Texas, Florida and Southern California—or in tropical and subtropical growing regions such as Thailand and India.

Our plants have to transition indoors for winter, tolerate months of reduced light and cooler conditions, enter or approach dormancy, and then transition safely back outdoors each spring. That transition can expose them to dramatic changes in temperature, light intensity, humidity and moisture demand as they move from the relatively controlled environment of the home or greenhouse into warm, humid outdoor conditions.

Those seasonal swings place additional demands on both the plant and its root zone—and make drainage, aeration and moisture management especially important.

Those challenges taught me something important:

The root zone has to change with the needs of the plant.

That experience became the foundation for Desert Oasis Media.

I'm an ISA Certified Arborist and Kentucky Master Gardener, but Desert Oasis wasn't developed in a laboratory or corporate conference room.

It was developed by a grower—through decades of germinating seeds, growing seedlings, managing dormancy, repotting plants, examining roots, correcting mistakes, and refining what works.
