About the plant
Black Beauty is part of my American Beauty Collection — Adenium obesum selected for deep, dark flower color. Obesum is the classic Desert Rose: quicker to bloom than arabicum and more forgiving, which makes it a good entry point if you're newer to the genus. Fifteen fresh seeds gives you real room to grow a batch and pick out your best.
Growing it in Zone 6 — and anywhere cold
I've grown Adenium in Northern Kentucky for over 30 years, and obesum wants what all of them want: warmth, strong light, and a fast-draining inorganic mix. Give the seed bottom heat to germinate, keep seedlings warm and bright through their first winter indoors, and go easy on the water while they establish. Obesum rewards you sooner than arabicum — many will show their first blooms young.
What you'll need to grow these
Seeds are only half the equation — germination comes down to the setup. Here's what I use:
