About the plant

'Mardi Gras' earns its name honestly. This hybrid throws a dramatic, multi-layered bloom — cream-yellow, deep magenta, lavender, and soft lime-green folded into ruffled, wavy-edged petals arranged in double or triple layers. No two blooms come out quite the same, and bloom color intensity shifts with sun exposure, temperature, and the season, so you're never looking at the exact same flower twice. Under that show sits the sculptural caudex Adenium obesum is known for — a thick, swollen base that trains well for bonsai-style work as the plant matures.

Growing it in Zone 6 — and anywhere cold

I've grown obesum in Northern Kentucky for over 30 years, and 'Mardi Gras' follows the same rules as the rest of the species: full sun, heat, and a fast-draining inorganic mix once it's potted on. It's drought tolerant and forgiving once established, but seedlings need bottom heat to germinate and warm, bright conditions through their first winter indoors before they go outside for the summer.
