Adenium obesum 'Lady Magenta' — Golden Cream & Magenta Streaked Desert Rose Seeds

Adenium obesum 'Lady Magenta' is a layered, multi-petal cultivar built around contrast — a warm buttery-yellow to golden-cream base worked through with deep magenta-pink streaking and fine feathered speckling along the petal edges. The effect reads almost painted rather than grown, and it's one of the more distinctive patterns I offer in obesum.

Flower Form
Multi-petaled, double-to-triple layered bloom with heavily ruffled margins. This is a full, dense flower form rather than a flat single — expect the layered structure to build out more fully as plants mature past their first couple bloom cycles.

Color
Warm cream-yellow to golden base, patterned throughout with vivid royal-magenta streaks, speckling, and feathered veining. Pattern intensity varies some seedling to seedling — normal for a hand-pollinated hybrid line — but the golden base with magenta feathering holds true across most of a seed batch.

Caudex & Growth Habit
Classic obesum form: a thick, sculptural swollen caudex with branching green stems. Good subject for specimen potting where you want a showy bloom on top of solid caudex development underneath.

Sun
Full direct sun is what pushes both flower production and pattern contrast on this one. The magenta streaking reads noticeably sharper under strong light than it does in partial shade.

From Seed
These come from hand-pollinated mother plants through my top Thai breeder network. Hand-pollinated hybrid seed carries strong parental genetics — a high percentage of seedlings will inherit the multi-petaled golden base with magenta streaking. You'll still see natural variation in petal layering and pattern intensity plant to plant, which is exactly how new line variations get discovered in a seed-grown population.

Zone 6 Notes
I run obesum outdoors in Northern Kentucky from late May through early September, then bring everything in before overnight lows approach 50°F. Full sun through that outdoor window is what gets you the sharpest magenta contrast — indoors under lights over winter, expect the patterning to soften some until the plant is back under real intensity next season.

GROWING BASICS

• Soak: Warm water soak, 2–4 hours before sowing, to soften the seed coat
• Substrate: Fast-draining seedling mix — 50/50 coarse inorganic grit/pumice and fine coco coir works well. Press lightly into the surface and cover very thinly with media or fine gravel.
• Germination temp: 80–90°F, with a humidity dome or tray cover to hold moisture
• Germination time: 3–7 days typical
• Light: Bright light on emergence, gradually transitioning to full sun
• Hardiness: Bring indoors before temps drop below 50°F
