About the plant

'American Sunset' delivers exactly what the name promises — a marbled blend of fiery red, golden yellow, and warm peach folded into ruffled, multi-layered petals, double or triple deep. It's one of the more striking obesum lines I've grown, and like most heavy-layered hybrids, sun exposure and temperature shift the intensity from bloom to bloom. Over time it builds the classic obesum caudex, a swollen sculptural base that trains well as the plant matures.

Growing it in Zone 6 — and anywhere cold

Most listings for this variety quote hardiness zones 10-11 and stop there, which isn't much help if you're not in one. I've grown obesum hybrids in Northern Kentucky for over 30 years, and 'American Sunset' is no exception to the rule the rest of them follow: full sun, heat, and a fast-draining inorganic mix once potted on. Soak seed 2-4 hours in warm water before sowing, keep the germination setup in the 75-85°F range with bright indirect light, and expect sprouts in 3-14 days. Move seedlings to full sun once established and go easy on the water — this plant wants dry between waterings, not damp. In Zone 6, that means bright, warm conditions indoors through the first winter before it goes outside for the season.
