Super Red flips the script on classic arabicum coloration. Where most premium hybrids chase black skin or silvery bark, this line develops a brilliant, deep reddish-bronze to wine-red pigmentation across its branches and upper caudex — paired with the same compact, heavy-branching genetics that make this group of cultivars worth collecting.
FULL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Adenium arabicum 'Super Red' (often seen folded into lines like Black Hawk Super Red or KHZ Super Red) is one of the most visually vibrant structural arabicums available — a line bred for color as much as form.
Reddish-Bronze Epidermis
The defining trait is skin tone. Under intense light and heat, the bark develops a rich, saturated dark red, maroon, or copper-bronze cast. New growth at the branch tips often emerges a bright, fiery red before hardening into a deeper wine tone as it matures.
Hyper-Dense Branching
Super Red is a heavy brancher by nature, producing an abundance of thin, tightly clustered vertical branches that shoot up from the shoulders of the caudex — short internodes, dense "bush" or crown appearance.
The "Squat" Foot
Structurally, it holds onto classic arabicum form: a very wide, flat-bottomed caudex spreading horizontally. The contrast between that broad base and the dense reddish canopy is what makes a mature specimen stand out as a standalone piece.
Foliage and Flushes
Leaves are compact, obovate, with a slight velvety sheen. A fresh growth flush — bright green leaves breaking through intense red terminal buds — is one of the more striking visual moments this line offers.
Flowers
Standard pink to light-red single blossoms, with some sub-lines trending toward more saturated pink tones that complement the reddish wood.
Zone 6 Notes
Color on this one is entirely earned, not guaranteed — the red is an anthocyanin response to UV and heat stress, so anything less than full, direct sun gets you a plain green-skinned plant instead of what you paid for. I keep Super Red in my hottest, brightest spot outside after May 15 and go light on nitrogen all season; heavy fertilizer pushes vegetative green growth at the expense of color. Pot in a lean, highly porous mix heavy on pumice, perlite, and gritty volcanic rock — that lets you water aggressively through hot summer stretches (which fuels the wide caudex and red wood expansion) without rotting the flat base. Indoors before first hard frost in mid-October, standard arabicum dormancy through winter.
