Black KHZ is one of the standout modern arabicum lines out of Thailand — a dwarf, heavily branched cultivar that builds a low, muscular caudex and dense, symmetrical canopy with almost no training required. Under strong heat and full sun, the bark darkens from green/bronze in seedlings to a deep purple-brown to near-black trunk. It's a structural plant first, grown for form rather than flower.

FULL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Adenium arabicum 'Black KHZ' (also seen in breeding circles as Choco Black KHZ, or simply KHZ) is a premium Thai hybrid built for collectors focused on bonsai-style structure over bloom. It's a staple line in high-end Thai breeding programs because it passes down its compact habit, heavy branching, and dark skin reliably — frequently crossed with Choco, Black Knight, and Godji to push toward even darker skin and hyper-dwarf form in later generations.

The Black Epidermis
Seedlings start out green to bronzed. The signature dark bark only develops as the plant matures, and it's heat- and sun-dependent — full, unfiltered exposure is what drives the bark from bronze toward deep purple-brown to near-black.

Caudex and Form
True to its arabicum roots, Black KHZ builds a wide, low, squat caudex early — growing outward before it grows up. It establishes a solid, "muscular" base rather than a tall central trunk.

Branching Habit
This is the line's calling card. Branches emerge tightly from the top of the caudex, producing a dense, upright, symmetrical canopy with minimal pruning or wiring needed to get a finished bonsai look.

Foliage and Flowers
Leaves are thick, fleshy, slightly obovate, with a fine velvety texture typical of quality arabicum hybrids — bright green against the dark wood. Flowers are standard single pink to light-red, secondary to the plant's structure, which is the real draw here.

Grown from seed, expect natural variation — not every seedling will hit peak dark-skin expression, but a high percentage will retain the compact habit and dark bark trait when grown hot and in full sun.

Zone 6 Notes
I grow these outside in full, direct sun after May 15 once nights hold above 50°F — that heat and light exposure is what triggers and holds the dark pigmentation, so don't tuck this one into partial shade. Indoors before first hard frost in mid-October. Pot in a fast-draining, mineral-heavy mix — I use Desert Oasis Potting Media — since the squat caudex and tight branching don't tolerate wet feet. Like the rest of the dark-skin arabicum line, it goes into hard winter dormancy: when foliage drops, cut water back to nearly nothing and hold it dry and cool until spring growth resumes.
