A rare Thai arabicum hybrid combining the dark pigmentation of ‘Onyx’ with the broad, low-slung caudex architecture of Lop Buri Muang Mai (LMA). This cross is selected for dark bronze-to-charcoal skin, strong basal development, compact proportions, short internodes, and natural multi-branching.

Adenium arabicum ‘Onyx × LMA’ is an exceptional hybrid cross between two premier Thai arabicum lines: ‘Onyx’ and Lop Buri Muang Mai (LMA).

The cross was developed to unite the deep skin pigmentation and compact branching of ‘Onyx’ with the massive basal caudex, radial root flare, and naturally branched architecture associated with LMA. The result is a promising collector plant with the potential for a broad, low-centered form and strongly contrasted dark bark.

Genetic Profile

‘Onyx’ contributes:

  • Deep purplish-black to dark bronze bark coloration.

  • Very short internode spacing.

  • Compact upright branching.

  • Strong dark-skin expression under intense light.

Lop Buri Muang Mai contributes:

  • Pronounced basal caudex development.

  • Thick radial root flare.

  • Dwarf, compact growth habit.

  • Dense natural canopy branching.

  • Strong potential for flat-board and centipede-style root training.

Expected Characteristics

Plants from this cross may develop deep olive-bronze, purplish-charcoal, or nearly black skin tones, particularly when grown under high-intensity light and strong ultraviolet exposure. The caudex is expected to remain broad and low rather than becoming excessively columnar.

The hybrid may also produce multiple primary leaders naturally, reducing the need for aggressive decapitation or pruning to establish a branched crown. Short internodes can create a compact canopy in which small, thick leaves sit closely along the branches.

Leaves may be slightly pubescent or semi-glossy, with reddish or purplish margins and veins appearing under bright growing conditions.

Seedling Variation

This is a seed-grown hybrid, not a cloned cultivar. Individual seedlings will vary. Some plants may express stronger ‘Onyx’ traits, including exceptionally dark skin and tighter branching. Others may lean toward the LMA phenotype, producing a broader caudex, heavier root flare, and more pronounced multi-branching.

This natural variation is part of the appeal of the cross and makes each seedling a distinct collector specimen.

Collector Notes

With appropriate development, this hybrid may be well suited for:

  • Thai-style caudex refinement.

  • Flat-board and centipede root training.

  • Compact bonsai-inspired presentation.

  • Long-term development as a specimen arabicum.

  • Collectors seeking dark-skinned, naturally branched Adenium.

For best expression, provide intense light, excellent drainage, warm temperatures, and a carefully managed watering cycle. Root development and trunk architecture will improve with patient cultivation rather than forced, rapid growth.

Product Highlights

  • Rare Adenium arabicum hybrid.

  • Cross of ‘Onyx’ × Lop Buri Muang Mai.

  • Potential for dark purplish-charcoal to bronze skin.

  • Broad, low-slung caudex architecture.

  • Strong radial root development.

  • Natural multi-branching potential.

  • Short internodes and compact canopy structure.

  • Seed-grown with meaningful phenotype variation.

  • Excellent candidate for Thai-style root training.

Important Growing Note

Because this is a seed-grown hybrid, mature form, pigmentation, branching, leaf characteristics, and caudex development will vary from plant to plant. Images represent the intended genetic direction of the cross and are not a guarantee of the exact appearance of every individual seedling.
