Adenium arabicum 'Black Spear' is a collector selection prized primarily for architectural form and unusually dark pigmentation. Rather than being selected chiefly for elaborate flowers, Black Spear is valued for its wide, heavy caudex, strong radial root development, dark purplish-brown to near-black bark, and distinctive upright “spear-like” branching.

What Makes Black Spear Distinctive?

Under strong light, developing stems and the upper caudex can display increasingly pronounced dark pigmentation. Thick vertical-to-ascending branches tend to radiate from the crown, producing the structured silhouette that gives Black Spear its name. The caudex develops toward a broad, squat, trunk-like form particularly well suited to bonsai-style training.

Foliage is typically thick and lanceolate, ranging from slightly puberulent to glossy dark green, sometimes displaying reddish-brown venation that complements the darker stems. Flowers are generally single pink to reddish with a lighter throat; however, Black Spear is grown primarily for caudex, branching structure and bark coloration rather than complex floral characteristics.

Growing Black Spear

Strong light and full-sun cultivation encourage compact growth and development of the characteristic darker bark pigmentation. Like other A. arabicum, Black Spear performs best in a warm environment and a highly aerated, fast-draining growing medium.

Growing from Seed

Every seedling is an individual. The Black Spear name identifies the genetic line from which these seeds were produced, but seed-grown plants naturally show variation in caudex form, branching, pigmentation, foliage and flowers. For collectors, that variability is part of the appeal: seedlings can be evaluated over time and exceptional individuals selected for further development.
