Desert Oasis Fall Top Dress Media — Application & Seasonal Care Guide

Prepare for the Cooler Season

Desert Oasis Fall Top Dress Media is a seasonal surface amendment developed for Adenium, Plumeria, Pachypodium and related caudiciform plants. Its purpose is to maintain a well-structured surface around the root collar as growth slows and watering requirements change.

Why use a fall top dress?

  • Helps maintain an open, mineral-rich surface.
  • Supports aeration at the soil surface and around the exposed caudex.
  • Discourages persistent surface moisture when used with proper watering and drainage.
  • Provides a tidy, stable finish for container-grown specimens.

How to Apply

  1. Inspect: Check the plant and existing potting medium. Remove fallen leaves, debris and any deteriorated top dressing.
  2. Apply: Spread a thin, even layer over the media surface. Avoid compacting it.
  3. Keep the caudex clear: Do not bury the caudex, stem base or root collar. Leave a small gap for air movement.
  4. Water appropriately: Water based on the plant’s activity, temperatures and the condition of the underlying potting medium. Allow the medium to dry between waterings; do not assume a dry-looking top dress means the root zone is dry.
  5. Adjust for dormancy: Reduce watering as active growth slows. Keep cold-sensitive plants protected from chilling and frost.
  6. Refresh when needed: Inspect periodically and remove or replace top dress that becomes contaminated, compacted or clogged with debris.

Important Growing Notes

Fall top dressing is not a substitute for proper drainage, suitable temperatures or seasonal watering adjustments. Do not use a surface amendment to cover rot or other root problems. Plants that are dormant or kept cool generally need less water than actively growing plants.
