Adenium Arabicum 'Black MKMK'
Selected specifically for high-melanin bark expression. Under strong, direct light, the
epidermis darkens toward deep charcoal, brown, or near-black. Growth habit is compact
and muscular, with dense branching and dark, leathery leaves. Light intensity directly
controls the payoff on this one — skimp on sun and you get an ordinary green-brown
plant instead of the deep, oxidized-bark look the line is bred for.
Growing it in Zone 6b: Same germination protocol I use across the arabicum lines —
Desert Oasis Germination Media, heat mat, soil temp mid-80s, expect germination in
about a week. Where Black MKMK differs is what happens after true leaves appear: get
it under strong light immediately. I don't wait on this one — from the first set of true
leaves it goes under full-intensity LEDs, because pigment development starts early and
a slow start under weak light is hard to correct for later. Keep humidity moderate rather than high through the seedling stage; this line's compact branching habit does better with some airflow than in a closed, humid propagation box. Water on a normal seedling schedule through the growing months, then reduce sharply as daylight drops for winter — a proper dry, bright dormancy is actually part of how the bark continues to darken year over year, so don't be tempted to keep it warm and wet through winter just because it's indoors. By the second growing season you should start seeing real pigment development, assuming the light has been consistent from the start.
