What Works in Humid Florida Will Not Work in Dry Heat
The Florida nursery substrate guide making the rounds is well-designed for its
environment: high humidity, warm winters, year-round root activity, and natural
moisture cycling driven by Florida heat. Coco coir, compost, humus, worm castings,
Black Kow, pine nuggets — it is a complex mix built to perform in a specific climate.
That climate does not describe most of the Western growing region.
The Western Variable: Aridity and Container Heat
Western growers face the opposite problem from cold climate and Pacific Northwest
growers. Your challenge is not excess moisture — it is heat stress and rapid desiccation.
Phoenix in July averages 106°F. Albuquerque averages 93°F. Even coastal California
sees hot dry spells that pull moisture out of containers rapidly. In that environment, a mix heavy in coco coir and organic amendments can be a liability for different reasons than in cold climates. Organic matter in high heat breaks down faster, compacts over time, and can shift pH in ways that affect nutrient availability. Pine nuggets in a container sitting in 110°F Arizona heat do not behave the same way they do in Florida humidity. Coco coir’s moisture retention, which is a feature in the PNW and a problem in Zone 6 winter, can actually work for Western growers in specific applications — but only when paired with aggressive inorganic drainage components that prevent the substrate from staying saturated after irrigation.
What Western Container Plumeria Need
The target for Western container culture is a media that holds just enough moisture to
support active root growth through your summer peak without sitting wet between
waterings. In practice this means high perlite or pumice content, minimal organic
fraction, and coarse particle size throughout.
Texas growers in the Dallas to Houston corridor, Zone 8b to 9a: You have a genuine
winter dormancy window — usually December through February. Container Plumeria
coming inside during that period need a fast-draining, low-organic media for the same
reasons cold climate growers do. The dormancy period may be shorter, but root rot does
not need long to establish.
Arizona and Nevada growers, Zones 9b–11: Your primary management challenge is
summer heat, not winter cold. Focus on inorganic-dominant media with good particle
size and consistent irrigation cycles. In-ground Plumeria in alkaline desert soil benefit
from amended planting zones, but containers need consistent drainage above all else.
California growers, Zones 9–11: Highly variable by location. Coastal Northern California
growers face the same heat deficit issue as PNW growers. Inland valley growers face
summer heat stress. Southern California coastal growers have the most Florida-like
conditions and have the most flexibility with media composition.
Oklahoma growers, Zone 7a–7b: You are managing a full Zone 6-style dormancy season
— typically five to six months indoors. Media selection follows the cold climate protocol:
inorganic-forward, fast-draining, low organic load.
