The Western region this week demonstrates exactly how much the same calendar date can mean different things to a grower depending on geography. Santa Fe had a 95% rain day Monday the 25th, a 20% day Tuesday, and is drying out cleanly through the rest of the week with highs climbing to 77–78°F. Oklahoma City has a 35% storm threat Tuesday and 30% Wednesday with highs at 84–86°F. Santa Monica is sitting at 64–68°F with marine influence and virtually no rain. Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet elevation.
Same region. Three completely different growing environments.
Air Temperature: Elevation and Latitude Drive the Range
For Western growers, the air temperature story is primarily about local elevation and distance from the coast rather than latitude alone.
Desert Southwest growers in Arizona, Nevada, and lower elevation New Mexico: You’re in full season already. Adenium should be pushing hard. Plumeria is active. Pachypodium is in the most favorable window it will see all year. Your air temperature challenge is not triggering growth — it’s managing the conditions when highs start running above 105°F in June. That’s a different problem than most of this article addresses. But your media choice matters now because what works at 90°F does not work the same way at 115°F.
Higher elevation Western growers in Santa Fe, Flagstaff, or the Colorado Plateau: Santa Fe’s forecast this week is your reference. A 95% rain day on the 25th followed by drying and temps climbing to 77–78°F by Wednesday tells you the warm-up is underway but still intermittent. Adenium and Pachypodium should be in containers, not in the ground, at elevation. Nights are still cool enough that a sustained cold rain on a warm caudex creates the wet-cold scenario these genera are least equipped to handle.
Texas growers in Dallas, San Antonio, and the Hill Country: Oklahoma City is your closest forecast reference in this data set. You’re running 84–86°F highs with storm threats Tuesday through Thursday. Active growth season. Same storm-management considerations as the Gulf Coast article but with lower humidity and better drying conditions after rain events.
California coastal growers: Santa Monica’s forecast — 64–68°F, 5–10% rain, marine layer — is your current reality. The same analysis that applies to Pacific Northwest coastal growers applies here: this is not a high-growth week for tropicals. Maintain, don’t push.
Soil Temperature: The Elevation Factor
At Santa Fe’s elevation, soil temperatures in containers lag air temperatures significantly. A 77°F air day at 7,000 feet means your container soil may be at 60–64°F. That’s below active root function threshold for Adenium and Pachypodium. This is a critical point for high-elevation Western growers: your planting calendar is not the same as your neighbor at 4,000 feet. A rule of thumb I use — for every 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet elevation, assume your effective soil temperature is 3–5°F below ambient air temperature on clear days, and potentially 8–10°F below ambient on cloudy or recently-rain days.

Light: The Western Advantage
Western growers — particularly in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and inland California — have a significant UV and light intensity advantage over every other region. The combination of high elevation, low humidity, and continental air mass means PAR levels are dramatically higher than coastal or northern growers receive.
This is genuinely good for your plants if media and watering are calibrated correctly. Adenium at 4,000–6,000 feet elevation in the Southwest will build more caudex mass in a single season than the same plant grown at sea level in Houston, given adequate heat and controlled moisture. Light intensity drives photosynthesis rate; photosynthesis rate drives caudex storage.
The risk is that high-light environments also accelerate evaporation from media surfaces. A container in full New Mexico sun in late May can go from properly moist to critically dry in 48 hours when temperatures are at 80°F and relative humidity is in the 15–25% range.
Summer Top Dress matters more in the Western region than anywhere else because of this dynamic. Apply it now, before your temperatures push into the 90s. The surface layer materially reduces evaporation rate from the top of the container, which gives you a longer interval between waterings without restricting airflow or drainage.
Moisture: Dry Air Changes Everything
For Western growers outside coastal California, the moisture calculation is nearly the reverse of Gulf Coast management. Your challenge isn’t too much moisture — it’s maintaining enough between watering cycles.
Oklahoma City’s storm threat this week is the exception. When storms do move through the Southern Plains and Southwest, they can deliver 1–3 inches quickly on media that was bone dry. That fast saturation-to-dry cycle is harder on roots than gradual wet-dry cycling. Media that is already dry at very low moisture is more hydrophobic — it temporarily repels water rather than absorbing it evenly, which can cause channeling where water runs down the pot wall and out the drainage holes without reaching the root zone. If you’re watering after a dry period in a Western climate, water twice with a 15-minute interval. First pass wets the surface and begins breaking hydrophobicity. Second pass penetrates evenly to the root zone. Desert Oasis media, with its coarse particle structure, rewets more readily than organic-heavy media after a dry period — but the double-pass technique is still best practice.
Wind: The Western Factor
Western growers understand wind more than most. Spring wind events across Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona can run sustained 30+ mph with gusts to 50 mph. For Plumeria, this is a significant concern. Actively growing tips are the most wind-vulnerable tissue.
If you’re running Plumeria in containers in an exposed Western location this time of year, consider a temporary windbreak on the prevailing wind side. A cloth barrier, cinder block wall, or strategic placement against a building can drop wind velocity at plant level by 50–70% without affecting light access. For Adenium and Pachypodium, wind accelerates transpiration from the stem surface, which can be beneficial in high-humidity conditions. In dry Western air, it can cause a moisture deficit situation faster than your watering schedule anticipates. If you’re seeing unexplained leaf curl or tip stress on Adenium in otherwise good conditions, check when you last watered and whether a wind event preceded the symptom.
