The Three-Media System: How I Use Potting Media, Spring Top Dress, and Summer Top Dress Together
WESTERN (TX, AZ, NV, CA, NM, OK)
Western growers are growing Adenium in conditions closest to the plant’s native habitat. The challenge isn’t making hostile conditions hospitable — it’s managing a climate that can tip too far the other direction: too much heat, too little moisture, and media that dries faster than anywhere else in the country.
By mid-May, desert Southwest growers are already managing high-heat conditions. Here’s where the three-media system applies right now.
Desert Oasis Potting Media
In low-humidity, high-heat western conditions, Potting Media’s mineral structure retains particle integrity through a full season — which is more than most organic-heavy mixes can say in desert heat. The fast drainage profile ensures that when you water deeply, water moves through without pooling at the root zone.
If repotting is still pending, do it now before peak summer heat arrives. Roots establish faster in moderate heat than in the 105°F+ conditions that arrive in June and July across AZ, NV, and the Texas Trans-Pecos.
Desert Oasis Spring Top Dress Media
Apply Spring Top Dress now — before peak summer heat sets in. In low-humidity desert conditions, your top inch of container media can become hydrophobic if it dries completely between waterings. Water runs off the surface rather than penetrating to the root zone. A fresh surface layer of mineral-structured media, applied before this becomes a problem, prevents it from developing in the first place.
Eastern Texas and Oklahoma growers with summer humidity: same timing — apply before peak humidity arrives rather than after.
Desert Oasis Summer Top Dress Media
Plan your Summer Top Dress application for late June across the desert Southwest — earlier than cold-climate growers need it, because your peak heat window arrives earlier. For AZ, NV, and NM growers, late June is right as your hardest conditions are building. Maintaining surface root zone drainage going into July and August is what separates plants that develop well from plants that stall.
For California coastal growers: your timeline is softer. Apply Summer Top Dress in July when heat peaks, or when you observe surface compaction developing.
