What Works in Florida Will Rot Your Plumeria in a Container

A well-constructed substrate guide from a Florida Plumeria nursery has been making
the rounds recently. It is detailed, clearly experience-based, and built around a complex
biologically active mix with coco coir, compost, humus, worm castings, Black Kow, and
pine nuggets. For Vero Beach, Zone 10a, it is defensible horticultural practice.
For most of the Pacific Northwest, it is a rot formula.

The PNW Growing Challenge Is Not Cold — It Is Heat Deficit
Coastal Oregon and Washington growers in Zone 8b–9: Your winters are mild enough
that Plumeria can sometimes be overwintered in an unheated garage or even a
protected porch. But your summers are your real constraint. Average July highs in
Portland run around 80°F. In Seattle, closer to 76°F. Vero Beach sees July highs
averaging 91°F with intense UV and low humidity windows in the morning.
Plumeria evolved in tropical and subtropical environments where heat accelerates
evaporation and keeps root zones cycling between wet and dry rapidly. In the PNW, that
cycle slows. Moisture lingers in the substrate longer. A mix loaded with coco coir,
compost, and pine nuggets that drains in two days in Florida may stay damp for five to
seven days on the Oregon coast.

Inland Pacific Northwest growers in the Willamette Valley or Puget Sound lowlands in
Zone 8a: You have more heat units than the coast, but the same moisture retention issue
applies. Your shoulder seasons — spring and fall — are long, cool, and overcast. A
biologically active mix that depends on heat and evaporation to manage moisture will
underperform in your conditions. Higher elevation or inland Washington and Idaho border growers in Zone 7b: You are managing a shorter growing window and potential for early fall cold. Your indoor season is l onger. Everything that applies to cold climate growers in the Midwest applies to your situation.

What the Substrate Needs to Do in the PNW
The goal is the same regardless of whether your challenge is cold dormancy or heat
deficit: the media needs to drain fast, hold minimal residual moisture, and maintain
airspace around the roots. In the PNW, inorganic media components are your best tool for extending the effective growing window. When the substrate does not stay wet, you can water on schedule rather than waiting for the soil to dry enough. Roots stay oxygenated. Combined with fast- draining media, this is the setup that consistently produces blooming Plumeria in the Pacific Northwest.


Inland PNW growers in the Willamette Valley and Puget Sound lowlands: You have the
heat units for container success without supplemental heat in summer, but a cold frame
or unheated greenhouse buys you the shoulder seasons that matter for root
development.
