The Three-Media System: How I Use Potting Media, Spring Top Dress, and Summer Top Dress Together
PACIFIC NORTHWEST (Zones 7b–9 — OR, WA, Coastal BC)
PNW Adenium and plumeria growers face a root zone challenge that’s different from every other region. It’s not cold — most of you have enough warmth in summer to push reasonable growth. It’s moisture management. High ambient humidity, cool nights that slow drying, and a short high-heat window mean your root zone is under more stress than a desert or cold-climate grower would experience.
By mid-May, you’re approaching or already in your outdoor window depending on location. Here’s where each product fits right now.
Desert Oasis Potting Media
If repotting hasn’t happened yet, do it this week. In PNW conditions, the fast-draining, mineral-structured formula is particularly important because your ambient humidity means media that holds moisture will stay wet too long between waterings. Potting Media moves water through quickly — which is exactly what you need when you can’t rely on heat and low humidity to dry the root zone between watering events.
Coastal Oregon and Washington growers (Zone 8b–9): Your outdoor transition is imminent or already done. A plant going outside in fresh Potting Media is set up correctly for the season. One that isn’t repotted yet should get done before it moves out.
Inland Pacific Northwest growers in the Willamette Valley or Puget Sound lowlands (Zone 8a): Same timing. You’re managing Adenium and Plumeria as a container plant — the quality of that container environment is your primary cultivation variable.
Higher elevation or inland Washington/Idaho border growers (Zone 7b): You’re closer to Zone 6 timing. Repot now, allow two to three weeks of indoor establishment before your outdoor move.
Desert Oasis Spring Top Dress Media
Apply at outdoor transition. In PNW conditions, Spring Top Dress also serves as a surface layer that drains faster than degraded media, which helps manage moisture accumulation at the surface during your rainy shoulder seasons. This is particularly useful for coastal growers who are dealing with late spring rain events that saturate container surfaces.
Desert Oasis Summer Top Dress Media
Apply when your high-heat window opens — typically late June to July for most PNW locations. In a short growing season, maintaining surface root zone integrity through peak heat is critical. You don’t have the luxury of a long recovery period if surface compaction degrades drainage during your best growing weeks.
