Memorial Day week in the Pacific Northwest is one of the more revealing forecasts for exotic plant growers. Santa Monica’s 10-day reads 64–68°F highs, 55–57°F lows, 5–10% rain probability throughout. Marine layer. No significant heat events. No real growth trigger for Adenium or Plumeria.

That’s your signal.

Air Temperature: The Pacific Problem
The fundamental challenge for Adenium, Plumeria, and Pachypodium in the Pacific Northwest is not cold — it’s the absence of heat. These genera don’t just tolerate heat; they require it for active development. Growth, bud set, and caudex expansion in Adenium are directly correlated with sustained day temperatures above 85°F. Plumeria wants 80–90°F to push flush cycles aggressively. Pachypodium sulcatum and other summer-growers want heat to activate.


Coastal Oregon and Washington growers (Zone 8b–9): Your current window looks like Santa Monica — persistently mild, low 60s on some days, marine influence all week. Your Adenium and Plumeria are not in danger. They’re also not growing hard. This is normal for late May in your climate. The management priority right now is maintaining them properly in a low-activity state while you wait for the heat window that typically opens in July–August. Do not make the mistake of increasing watering to “encourage growth” at these temperatures. At 64–67°F air temperature, root activity is minimal. More water means more sitting moisture. Keep media dry between cycles. Water only when the top 1–2 inches are confirmed dry.

Inland Pacific Northwest growers in the Willamette Valley or Puget Sound lowlands (Zone 8a): You may be catching a few warmer days inland this week, but the marine air is still a factor. If you have greenhouse or cold frame capacity, keep your tropicals under glass until you get a sustained 3-day window of highs at 75°F or above. A Plumeria moved outside at 65°F will sit dormant and accumulate moisture stress if its media isn’t draining completely.


Higher elevation or inland Washington/Idaho border growers (Zone 7b): You’re behind the coast on heat accumulation. Your planting window for outdoor placement is at minimum 2–3 weeks out from today. Watch overnight lows — any forecast with a low below 50°F is a night to bring containerized Pachypodium and Adenium inside or under glass.

Soil Temperature: The Slowest Variable in Your Climate
In a marine climate, soil temperature lags air temperature by more than it does in continental climates. Even on a 70°F day, a black nursery container sitting in partial shade on a deck can have root zone temperatures of 58–62°F. That’s below the threshold for active water and nutrient uptake in all three genera. This is why the wet-root syndrome kills more Pacific Northwest tropicals than frost does. Growers water at what looks like appropriate intervals for the weather, not realizing the soil is still at 60°F and the roots are sitting in moisture they can’t process.
Desert Oasis Potting Media solves this structurally. The drainage rate is high enough that even at low root temperatures, excess moisture exits the container rather than pooling against the root system. When temperatures do climb and the roots activate, the media transitions cleanly to a productive wet-dry cycle.
If your containers have been in standard potting mix through the winter and spring, this is an ideal time to repot into Desert Oasis before the heat season. The media change now will set you up for a productive window when the heat does arrive.

Light: Supplemental Is Not Optional Here
The PNW marine layer cuts photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) significantly compared to inland continental climates. Santa Monica this week is a reasonable proxy for coastal Oregon and Washington — and that’s not high-light growing weather for Adenium and Plumeria.
If you have grow light capacity, keep supplemental lighting running on Adenium and Plumeria until you have 3+ consecutive days of direct outdoor sun. The goal is to maintain the metabolic activity that drives root function and prepares the plant for the heat burst when it comes.
For Pachypodium growing under glass: afternoon direct sun through glass is acceptable and beneficial right now. Just ensure ventilation is adequate — a closed greenhouse on a 70°F sunny day can hit 95–100°F, which is good for growth but only if moisture is controlled.

Moisture and Media Strategy
Coastal Oregon and Washington (Zone 8b–9): Watering frequency should be low — once every 10–14 days for containerized Adenium and Plumeria in 1-gallon or larger containers at current temperatures, assuming media is draining completely. If you’re seeing any surface moss or algae on your media, that’s confirmation your watering frequency is too high for the current temperature and light levels.
Spring Top Dress applied now will accelerate surface drying between cycles and help prevent that moss and algae colonization. It’s a simple step that pays dividends when temperatures rise and you want a clean, fast-cycling root zone.
Inland and Willamette Valley growers (Zone 8a): You’ll have more evaporation going than the coast, but the same root temperature principle applies. Soil temperature, not air temperature, should drive your watering decisions. Invest in a simple soil thermometer — it’s the most useful tool in your PNW tropical growing kit.

Positioning for the Heat Window
The single best thing PNW growers can do in late May is prepare for July and August rather than trying to force growth in June.
That means:
1. Get your media right now — repot into Desert Oasis if needed
2. Establish a low-frequency watering discipline while temperatures are mild
3. Position containers in your highest-light, most wind-protected location
4. Apply Spring Top Dress now; have Summer Top Dress ready to deploy when consistent highs hit 80°F+
When the heat does arrive in your climate, it often comes fast. Plants that are in the right media with the right root zone moisture going into that window will outperform plants that are being pushed hard in marginal conditions all spring.
