How much Sun is Needed growing Adenium and Pachypodium in the Pacific Northwest

Sun management in the Pacific Northwest is a different problem than in every other region in this article. While cold climate and warm climate growers are asking how to protect plants from excess sun, PNW growers in June are asking how to get their plants enough sun to grow. The marine layer, overcast skies, and cool temperatures that define coastal PNW early summer mean that sun exposure is a resource to maximize, not a risk to manage — until the heat dome arrives.
Coastal Oregon and Washington (Zone 8b–9)
In early June, coastal Adenium and Pachypodium need every hour of direct sun available. Do not shade them. Do not filter afternoon sun. Put them in the most exposed south-facing position available and leave them there. The acclimation concern that applies in other regions is largely irrelevant in coastal PNW because the outdoor light intensity in a marine layer June rarely exceeds what the plants experienced near a bright south-facing window.
The critical sun and heat management tool in coastal PNW is positioning relative to heat-retentive surfaces. South-facing masonry walls, gravel or pea stone beds, and enclosed courtyard spaces all accumulate and radiate heat that elevates the local microclimate above ambient air temperature. Placing Adenium and Pachypodium in these microclimates in early June can add 5 to 10°F to the effective growing temperature and meaningfully extend the heat units available to the plant.
Media condition in coastal PNW June is dominated by the moisture retention problem that cool temperatures create. The slow dry-down between waterings in cool conditions means media compaction and surface organic crust development happen more slowly than in warm climates — but when the heat dome arrives, those same surface conditions can become a problem rapidly as watering frequency suddenly increases.
SUN WINDOW Coastal PNW: the heat dome event — typically one to three weeks of sustained above-normal heat in July or August — is when sun management becomes a risk. When it arrives, do not assume your plants can handle the jump from marine layer conditions to 100°F direct sun. A brief acclimation protocol of 3 to 5 days of morning sun before full heat dome exposure prevents the photoinhibition damage that growers who skip this step see every summer.
Inland PNW — Willamette Valley, Puget Sound Lowlands (Zone 8a)
Inland Zone 8a gets a more reliable summer heat window than coastal growers. By the second week of June, daytime temperatures in the Willamette Valley often reach the low 80s, and the growing season is genuinely open. Acclimation from indoor conditions should be at or near completion — push plants to full sun positions now.
Fertilization in inland Zone 8a in June should move to full-rate balanced NPK. The heat window is your growing window, and the feeding program should be running at Peak Growth rate from the first consistently warm week through the end of August. Do not stay on spring-ramp rates into June.
Zone 7b Inland Washington / Idaho Border
Apply cold climate Zone 6 protocols. Your outdoor season is open in June and acclimation from indoor conditions is appropriate. Full sun positions, full-rate fertilization, media maintenance as described. Your Pachypodium growing window is shorter than Zone 6 but fully functional from June through September in good conditions.
