Pachypodium from Seed: Gulf Coast & Florida Guide

Gulf Coast growers have the warmest baseline conditions in the country for growing Pachypodium from seed, and June is still the right month to focus on it — not because earlier is impossible, but because June aligns with peak heat and the shift into your rainy season, which you'll need to manage.

That contrast between the two locations is the Gulf Coast in miniature. The immediate coastline in places like Sarasota gets you heat with comparatively manageable rain risk most days. Move inland — toward Tupelo, or anywhere off the coast in Alabama, Louisiana, or Mississippi — and the humidity climbs and the rain becomes a near-daily threat by early next week. If you're germinating in an inland Gulf Coast location, get your cover in place now, before that wetter pattern arrives, not after you've already seen damping off in the tray.
The heat advantage and the rain problem
Summer heat on the Gulf Coast is genuinely good for Pachypodium. Soil temps outdoors can reach and hold 90°F+ without any supplemental heat, which means germination can happen in a simple outdoor setup with a humidity dome — no heat mat required in most Gulf Coast locations in June and July. That's a significant advantage.
The challenge is rainfall. Gulf Coast summers are wet, and Pachypodium seed and seedlings are highly susceptible to damping off and root rot when media stays saturated. Managing this means either germinating under cover — a covered porch, greenhouse, or similar structure — or elevating your germination setup enough that drainage is never compromised.
I'd recommend germinating in a sheltered but warm location: full morning sun exposure, some afternoon shade protection from direct rain, and fast-draining media that doesn't hold water for more than a few hours after watering or rainfall.
Germination protocol
The same media blend works here — perlite and coarse grit — but on the Gulf Coast, lean toward faster drainage rather than moisture retention. Your ambient conditions provide enough humidity to prevent the desiccation problem that cold climate growers have to work around. Water from below when possible, and if you're seeing any damping off in the first few weeks, it's almost always a drainage or airflow issue rather than a watering frequency issue.
Germination on the Gulf Coast under good conditions is fast. With fresh seed, you can see sprouting in 3–7 days. First-year growth rates are significantly better than what cold climate growers see — a seedling that's 6 months old on the Gulf Coast can look like a 12–18 month seedling from a Zone 6 collection.
Year-round growing and species selection
Gulf Coast growers have the option to keep Pachypodium in active growth year-round, particularly in southern Florida. P. lamerei is essentially evergreen in frost-free conditions and can be grown as a landscape specimen in Zone 10–11. For growers in Zone 8b–9 along the northern Gulf Coast, hard freezes are still a concern — have a plan to protect or move plants during freeze events.
The slower-growing, more architecturally interesting species — P. brevicaule, P. rosulatum var. gracilius — reward Gulf Coast growers with faster caudex development than growers in any other region of the country. If you want show-quality plants from seed in the shortest timeframe, the Gulf Coast is where it happens.
Dormancy considerations
In frost-free Gulf Coast conditions, Pachypodium may not go through a pronounced dry dormancy the way they do in cold climates. This is acceptable for most species but worth monitoring — some growers in South Florida report that plants without a seasonal dry period become more susceptible to root issues over time. Giving your plants a 6–8 week period of reduced water in winter, even in frost-free areas, tends to produce healthier long-term root systems.
