The Biloxi forecast this week says what the Gulf Coast doesn’t need to hear on Memorial Day: Flood Watch issued. 70% rain probability today, 60% Tuesday, 65% Thursday, 60% Friday. Lows holding at 74–76°F. Highs in the low 80s.
This is not a growth problem for your Adenium, Plumeria, and Pachypodium. This is a root management problem. The plants are ready to grow. The environmental conditions are conspiring against the root zone.

Air Temperature: Not the Issue
Gulf Coast growers are past the “will it trigger?” question for all three genera. At 75–80°F ambient with lows in the mid-70s, you’re in the full growing season. Adenium will push aggressively. Plumeria will set flush cycles and buds. Pachypodium is actively growing.
The air temperature challenge on the Gulf Coast is not cold — it’s sustained heat combined with high humidity, which changes how your media behaves and how quickly pathogens activate.

Soil Temperature: Above Threshold, But Watch Saturation
With lows in the 74–76°F range, soil temperatures in containers are staying above 70°F even overnight. That’s good for root activity. The problem is that at this temperature and moisture level, bacterial and fungal activity in the root zone also accelerates.
Saturated, warm media is the fastest path to crown rot in Adenium and stem rot in Pachypodium on the Gulf Coast. The pathogens that cause these problems — primarily Phytophthora and Fusarium species — are most active precisely when conditions feel best: warm, wet, and humid.

The coarse inorganic fraction doesn’t compress or clump when wet, which means even after a 2-inch rain event, the air pockets in the media remain. That airspace is what keeps your root zone from going fully anaerobic. If your containers don’t have drainage holes adequate for the rainfall rates in this forecast, address that before the next rain cycle. A single drainage hole at the bottom of a gallon container is not sufficient for a 2-inch rainfall event in Biloxi this week.

Light: High Intensity Requires Adaptation
Late May on the Gulf Coast means UV index 9–11 and intense direct sun. For Plumeria, this is ideal — you should be seeing active flush cycles and early bud development. For Adenium, full Gulf Coast sun this week is appropriate for established plants. New divisions, recent repots, and any plants that were overwintered in reduced light need a 7–10 day shade transition before going to full direct exposure. Pachypodium species native to Madagascar’s dry forests handle full Gulf Coast sun well once acclimated. If yours are pushing active growth right now, full sun will accelerate that. If they’re still looking somewhat dormant — watch the stem bases for soft spots in this wet weather. Wet, warm conditions around a Pachypodium stem base that isn’t actively pushing growth is a rot setup.

Moisture: The Critical Variable This Week
With rain probability at 60–70% for multiple days this week, you may not be watering your containers at all — the sky is doing it for you. The question is whether your media and drainage are handling it correctly.
Signs your containers are not managing the rainfall load:
Standing water in the saucer more than 2 hours after a rain event
Media surface staying visibly wet for more than 24 hours after rain stops
Any soft, discolored tissue at the crown or base of the plant

If you see any of these, act immediately. Move the container under cover if possible. Let the media dry completely. Check the drainage holes for blockage. Consider a partial media replacement with Desert Oasis if the existing media is degraded, compacted, or clearly retaining too much moisture. Spring Top Dress on Gulf Coast containers this week serves a different function than it does in colder climates. It acts as a physical barrier between the media surface and the splashing rain that carries pathogens from the ground onto your plant bases. A coarse, inorganic surface layer reduces the splash transfer that’s a common but overlooked infection pathway in high-rainfall periods.

Wind: Gulf Coast Spring Wind Events
Gulf Coast storm systems often include wind gusts that can run 25–40 mph during the same events creating the rainfall problems. For Plumeria, protect tip growth. Active flush tips are the most vulnerable tissue on the plant — a single break from wind or mechanical contact opens an entry point for Fusicoccum (brown tip) and Plumeria rust. Stake any Plumeria that is in active flush right now before the next storm system moves through.

For Adenium and Pachypodium, wind is less of a structural threat but the drying effect post-storm can be significant. After a multi-day rain event clears and Gulf Coast sun returns, soil temperatures and evaporation rates will spike simultaneously. Watch your media carefully in the 48 hours after this week’s rain clears — the transition from saturated to critically dry can happen faster than you expect. Summer Top Dress deployed as soon as this storm system moves through will help moderate that post-storm drying spike and give you a wider watering window going into June.
