Preparing Adenium for Winter: How to Keep Your Desert Rose Thriving Through the Cold

Adenium, often called the Desert Rose, is a striking succulent native to arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Known for its sculptural trunk and vibrant trumpet-shaped flowers, Adenium thrives in warm, sunny conditions. However, when winter arrives—especially in cooler climates—this tropical beauty requires special care to survive the season and bloom again in spring.

As temperatures begin to drop below 60°F (15°C), Adenium plants naturally enter a dormant phase. Growth slows, leaves may yellow and fall, and the plant conserves energy. The most important step during this period is protecting your Adenium from cold and excess moisture. These two factors are the primary causes of winter decline.

If you grow your Adenium outdoors, move it indoors or into a sheltered area before nighttime temperatures fall consistently below 50°F (10°C). A bright, sunny window or a space with supplemental grow lights will help maintain light levels. Adenium prefers at least six hours of indirect sunlight, even in dormancy. Avoid placing it near cold drafts or heating vents, as sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the plant.

During winter dormancy, watering must be drastically reduced. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings—sometimes for several weeks. Overwatering when the plant is not actively growing can lead to root rot. A light watering once every three to four weeks is usually sufficient. Do not fertilize until spring, when new growth resumes.

If your Adenium is in a pot, ensure it has excellent drainage. Clay pots and gritty, cactus-style soil mixes work best to prevent soggy roots. It’s also wise to check for signs of pests before bringing plants indoors; treat any issues early to avoid infestations during winter.

As spring approaches and temperatures rise above 60°F (15°C), you’ll notice new leaf buds forming. Gradually resume watering and begin fertilizing lightly to encourage vigorous growth and flowering.

With proper winter care—warmth, light, and minimal water—your Adenium will rest peacefully through the colder months and burst back to life as the days grow longer.
