This is a deliberate cross, not two varieties grown side by side. 'Torpido' brings an elongated, broad caudex that spreads horizontally instead of climbing — a low, torpedo-
shaped base rather than a tall column. 'Rambo' brings the muscle: heavily flared shoulders and thick primary branching.

Cross the two and you get seedlings that combine both traits — a wide, muscular base topped with tight internodes and strong horizontal spread. It's one of the more "bullish" silhouettes in arabicum breeding, and it fills a wide bonsai tray better than almost anything else I grow.

Growing it in Zone 6b: Start seed indoors now rather than outdoors — you're past the point where an outdoor start gives you enough runway before temperatures drop. I germinate arabicum crosses like this one in Desert Oasis Germination Media; the fast-
draining mineral base matters more than usual here because these seedlings put energy into lateral caudex spread early, and standing moisture around a swelling base is where
I've lost seedlings in the past.

Keep media surface-moist, not wet, and hold soil temps in
the mid-80s with a heat mat until germination, which typically runs 5–10 days for
arabicum. Once true leaves appear, this cross wants strong, direct light from day one — under-
lighting it slows the branching response that makes the cross worth growing. I run mine under full-spectrum LEDs through the first winter indoors, since Zone 6 doesn't give young seedlings enough natural light this time of year to develop the tight branching structure the genetics are built for. Water sparingly through the first dormancy — this is a first-year seedling, not an established caudex, so it doesn't need a hard dry-down, just reduced frequency as light drops.

By spring, you'll have a seedling already showing the wide, low structure this cross is
known for — training and pot selection from year one is where you set up the long-term
shape.
