Root zone temperature differential between the two media types was notable even through the pot wall. The case for inorganic-dominant structure writes itself on a night like this.
It rained hard in Northern Kentucky tonight. We are sitting at 57°F with 100% precipitation probability and close to an inch of rain expected overnight. I went out at 10 PM and checked drainage on three recently repotted Adenium in Desert Oasis Potting Media. Water cleared in under a minute. The neighboring pot with commercial cactus mix still had surface pooling more than four minutes later. That is the difference that matters — and it is the subject of today's article.
Why Media Is the Foundation — Not an Afterthought
Adenium, Plumeria, and Pachypodium share a common ancestry in semi-arid to arid tropical environments. All three are caudiciform or pachycaul plants — they store water and nutrients in their root system, stem base, or trunk. That storage architecture is precisely what makes them vulnerable to the wrong growing medium.
The root systems of these plants evolved to function in soils that drain almost immediately after rainfall, then dry out substantially before the next rain event. Soil oxygen levels in their native environments remain high because the substrate is mineral-dominant, low in organic matter, and structurally coarse. Their roots are built for aerobic conditions — not the sustained moisture retention of a standard potting mix.
When you put any of these plants into high-peat or high-bark potting soil, you are reversing their native condition. The medium stays wet. The roots sit in a low-oxygen environment. Root cells begin to break down. That process accelerates the moment temperatures drop, drainage slows, or watering frequency exceeds what the medium can handle. The damage is often invisible until the caudex goes soft — at which point recovery is difficult and often incomplete.
What the Right Media Actually Looks Like
A professional growing medium for Adenium, Plumeria, and Pachypodium needs to accomplish three things simultaneously: drain fast, hold minimal moisture at the root zone, and maintain structural integrity over multiple growing seasons.
The substrate should be inorganic-dominant — meaning mineral particles make up the majority of the volume, not peat, bark, or coco coir. Coarse perlite, pumice, crushed granite, lava rock, decomposed granite, and quartzite grit are all appropriate mineral components. The particle size matters as much as the mineral type: particles under 3mm tend to compact over time and reduce drainage rates. Particles in the 3–8mm range maintain pore structure through multiple seasons and wet/dry cycles.
Organic content in the mix should be minimal — present enough to support beneficial microbial activity and provide some CEC (cation exchange capacity) for nutrient availability, but not high enough to retain moisture at the root zone. A target of 10–20% organic matter by volume is appropriate for most growers. Anything above 30% begins to work against you in terms of drainage and oxygen availability.
Aeration and drainage are not the same thing, and both matter. Aeration refers to the percentage of pore space in the medium that is occupied by air rather than water after drainage. A medium can drain quickly but still have poor aeration if the pore structure is too fine. The reverse is also possible. A well-engineered substrate achieves both: fast drainage through particle size and minimal capillary action, and high air-to-water ratio through coarse mineral structure.
Nutrient Requirements by Genus
Adenium
Adenium are moderate feeders during active growth. They respond well to balanced fertilizer with elevated phosphorus during the flowering window and nitrogen-dominant feeding during vegetative push. They do not require a nutrient-rich growing medium — they require a medium that makes nutrients available efficiently. A dense, high-peat mix often causes nutrient lockout rather than improving uptake, because saturated root zone conditions reduce root function. Feed in the water column, not through the medium.
Plumeria
Plumeria have higher nutrient demands than Adenium, particularly for phosphorus. The classic 10-30-10 fertilizer recommendation for Plumeria is not a myth — phosphorus availability directly influences bloom set and root development. What matters for media is that Plumeria roots need oxygen. Plumeria in waterlogged soil do not just grow slowly — they rot. The root system is susceptible to Phytophthora and Pythium even in slightly warm conditions, and wet media at any temperature accelerates infection. Fast drainage is non-negotiable.
Pachypodium
Pachypodium are the most demanding of the three in terms of media requirements. They are extremely sensitive to root zone moisture and do not tolerate wet conditions for even short periods during cooler temperatures. Most Pachypodium species originate from rocky, nearly mineral-only substrates in Madagascar and southern Africa. A growing medium that works well for Adenium will still be too moisture-retentive for Pachypodium unless drainage is exceptional. I run Pachypodium in a substrate that is 80–90% inorganic by volume, with coarser particle sizes than what I use for Adenium.
Why Commercial Cactus Mix, Perlite, and Standard Potting Soil Fall Short
This is the question I get most often, so I will answer it directly.
Commercial cactus and succulent mix is designed for the mass market. It is an improvement over standard potting soil, but it is typically 40–60% peat or coco coir with added perlite. That composition drains better than straight potting soil, but it still holds far too much moisture for Adenium, Plumeria, or Pachypodium. After one or two seasons, the peat compresses, drainage degrades further, and you end up with a medium that behaves almost identically to what it replaced. The label says cactus mix. The performance does not.
Straight perlite drains well but offers no structural complexity, minimal CEC, and no moisture gradient. It also tends to float and stratify in the container. It is better than potting soil alone but not a substitute for a properly formulated inorganic mix.
Standard potting soil is not appropriate for any of these genera under any circumstances. It is formulated for moisture retention — the exact opposite of what these plants need. High peat content, fine particle structure, and added wetting agents create root zone conditions that will cause decline in Adenium and Pachypodium within one season, and Plumeria will show root rot symptoms before the first summer is over in most climates.
The problem with all three is not just drainage — it is sustained moisture at the root zone between watering events. These plants are built for dry intervals. The medium needs to support those dry intervals by releasing moisture quickly and then allowing the root zone to return to an aerobic state.
Media Timing and Seasonal Considerations — Cold Climate (Zones 3–7b)
Cold climate growers face a media challenge that other regions do not: the combination of a short outdoor growing season and a long indoor/controlled-environment period. The medium that performs well on an outdoor bench in July needs to perform equally well in a greenhouse or spare room in January — at lower temperatures, reduced light, and with infrequent watering.
Zone 3–5 growers: Your outdoor season is short — often June through late August for Adenium and Plumeria. During the indoor period, which can run eight to nine months, you need a medium that will not stay wet for extended periods at 65°F with minimal light. Standard potting soil in January, at those conditions, with once-a-month watering, becomes anaerobic quickly. An inorganic-dominant medium maintains drainage and aeration even at minimal watering frequency.
Zone 6 growers like me in Northern Kentucky: You have a slightly longer window — outdoor-capable from late May through mid-October for Adenium with protection, and Plumeria through September. We had rain all day today and overnight, and I checked drainage on freshly repotted Adenium in Desert Oasis Potting Media at 10 PM. The medium cleared in under a minute. For all cold climate growers: repotting in spring before temperatures stabilize above 60°F at night is the right window. Use this timing to evaluate your medium. If the old medium has compacted, lost its coarse structure, or shows dark staining and compression at the root zone, replace it. Do not reuse degraded media on these genera.
