The last week of May in the Cold Climate zone is not a uniform event. Right now, Champaign, Illinois is looking at 81°F Tuesday and 85°F Wednesday with barely 5% rain chance all week. Kansas City is on the same track — 86°F Tuesday and Wednesday, bone dry. Boston had a warm burst but is about to drop back to 67°F Thursday and 63°F Friday before falling to 56°F Saturday.
Columbia, South Carolina — which sits in Zone 7b — just came through 90% rain probability on Monday and 80% on Tuesday. It’s clearing, but the soil is saturated.
These are not minor differences. These are four completely different growing situations happening simultaneously across the same regional audience. Here’s how to read each one through the lens of your plants.
Air temperature is visible. Soil temperature is what actually controls whether roots absorb water, whether mycorrhizal activity increases, and whether new feeder roots are pushing into the media. For all three genera, active root function begins around 65°F soil temperature and becomes vigorous above 70°F. The problem in spring is that air temperature climbs faster than soil temperature. A container that’s been sitting inside at 68°F air may have soil at 58–60°F. That plant looks alive, but the root system is still largely dormant.
What this means practically: the first few waterings of the season often go nowhere. The roots aren’t taking it up. It sits. It pools at the bottom of the container. If your media has poor drainage, that’s the beginning of a root rot event that won’t show symptoms until June.

Late May in the Cold Climate zone means day length is approaching maximum — roughly 15 hours of daylight at 40° latitude. What matters isn’t just length, but intensity and angle.
Plumeria is the most light-demanding of the three. It needs 6+ hours of direct, unfiltered sun for active bud development. A Plumeria in dappled shade will grow leaves. It won’t set flower buds until it gets direct exposure. If yours overwintered under grow lights and you’re just now moving it outside, expect a 10–14 day adjustment period. The leaves that developed under artificial light are not optimized for full sun. Gradual exposure over 7–10 days prevents sunscald on the new tissue. Adenium in Zone 6 this week wants full direct sun. After months of lower light intensity, the caudex is primed to push hard. Don’t interrupt that with shade cloth unless temperatures are running above 95°F, which they’re not in the Cold Climate zone this week. Let the sun do its work. Pachypodium handles full sun well once temperatures are consistent, but be careful with species like P. lamerei and P. rosulatum coming off a long indoor season. Their stems can show sun stress (bleaching, soft spots) if moved to full direct exposure too quickly. A week of morning sun with afternoon shade will transition them cleanly.
Every moisture decision this time of year is actually a root temperature and drainage rate calculation in disguise.
The rule I use: water only when the top 1–2 inches of media are fully dry AND air temps are above 65°F. This isn’t water restriction for its own sake. It’s allowing the media to cycle through wet and dry, which is how oxygen gets to the roots.
Spring Top Dress applied now across the surface of your containers addresses this directly. The coarse surface layer it creates increases evaporation rate from the top of the container, which pulls the drying cycle down through the media from above rather than only from below. In containers that tend to stay wet at the center and dry at the edges, this makes a meaningful difference.
For Zone 6 growers: your first week of reliable outdoor temperatures is not the time for aggressive irrigation. Establish the dry-cycle rhythm first. Push the first outdoor watering until you can confirm the top two inches are genuinely dry.
For Zone 7 growers in South Carolina and Georgia: after this week’s rain, don’t water again until you’ve done a finger-test at 2 inches and come out dry. The ambient temperatures this week — highs in the mid-80s to 90°F — will dry media faster than you might expect. But trust the test, not the calendar.
Wind does three things to containerized tropicals in spring: it accelerates transpiration from leaves, it dries media from the surface faster than expected, and it causes physical stress on new growth. For Plumeria pushing new tip growth, a sustained 20–25 mph wind can snap new tips or cause bruising that opens the plant to fungal entry. If your location has spring wind events, stake or shelter new growth until it’s 4+ inches long and lignifying. For Adenium, wind is generally not a problem until temperatures drop. But watch for the combination: cool night temperatures + wind. A 55°F night with wind feels like 48°F to the plant. That combination will stall a growth cycle that was otherwise building nicely.
