Fall Transition: Bringing Plants In, Starting Seed Indoors (Cold Climate 3–7b)
Share
Field Note: September 22, 2026 — Overnight lows in Florence, KY dropped into the upper 40s and low 50s this week, bottoming near 49°F Friday. Daytime highs are still low-to-mid 70s, and first frost is 3–4 weeks out, but nights are now consistently below the 60°F threshold that slows root uptake in Adenium and Pachypodium. A rain system moves through midweek, then clears into a dry, cool stretch Friday through the weekend. Florence, KY (Zone 6b).
Cold climate growing means two jobs converge every September: getting mature caudex plants indoors before frost, and getting fresh seed started indoors before the sowing window ages out. Both are triggered by the same signal — falling night temperatures and shortening daylight.
Watering: Cut back as soon as nights sit consistently below 60°F. This is ahead of when the plant visibly needs it, not after.
Bringing plants in: Stage the move over one to two weeks rather than all at once. A sudden move from outdoor light and airflow to indoor conditions is its own stress event, and staging it reduces leaf drop.
Zone 3–5: You're already past the point of "watching the forecast." Night temperatures are already well below the 60°F threshold — plants should be in now.
Zone 6 (Northern Kentucky and similar): A few weeks of buffer before frost, but dormancy prep starts today. Cut watering, stop fertilizing, begin the staged move indoors.
Zone 7 (Tennessee, Carolinas): More runway before frost — the best window of the year to get an indoor seed-starting setup running before you also need it for dormancy management. Premium plants and Desert Oasis media perform best in this longer, milder transition window.
Seed starting: Fresh Adenium arabicum and obesum seed loses viability in storage, so sowing now — indoors, under controlled heat and light — beats waiting for spring. Consistent 85–90°F media temperature and high humidity through germination is easier to hold indoors in September than to chase outdoors in April.
