Cold Climate (Zones 3–7b)

If you grow desert plants in a cold climate, this is the year your media gets tested. Across the eastern half of the country — Ohio Valley, Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and down through the Carolinas — rain has run above normal all summer, and the humidity comes with it. Here in Northern Kentucky I’ve got rain chances every day this coming week and overnight lows near 70. That combination — wet surface plus warm, humid nights — is exactly what rots a caudex.
Field note, August 2: Caudex plants in inorganic media are shedding this week’s rain with no surface moisture holding at all. Any pot still in an organic bagged mix stays damp at the collar for hours. Florence / Union, Northern Kentucky (Zone 6b).
Why cold-climate growers get hit hardest
Root rot is an oxygen problem, not a water problem. When media stays saturated, air is driven out of the pore space, roots suffocate, and rot moves into the dying tissue. Adenium, Plumeria, and Pachypodium are built for feast-or-famine — a hard drink, then dry ground and air at the roots. A wet year removes the “then dry” half of that cycle, and if your soil is a water-holding organic mix, the plant never gets its oxygen back.
The fix is well-draining soil for succulents that is inorganic and structured — pumice, lava, quartzite grit — so water runs through in seconds and air returns in minutes. I run everything here in inorganic media for exactly this reason.
Your zone-by-zone reality this year
Zone 3–5 growers (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, upper Midwest): Your season is short, so your plants are outdoors right now and can’t afford a setback. Your added risk is cool, wet nights — when temperatures drop toward the mid-50s with saturated media, rot pressure climbs fast. Keep potted plants under an eave, elevate them off standing water, and get anything in organic mix moved to inorganic media before your nights start cooling in earnest. Ease off water and fertilizer during wet stretches.
Zone 6 growers like me in Northern Kentucky: Wet, humid, and warm at night is our summer signature this year. Everything I own is in inorganic media, and I top dress the surface so the base of the plant never sits in a wet collar. If you do one thing this week, top dress — swap the top inch of organic surface for an inorganic top dress and you cut surface moisture retention immediately, no repot required.
Zone 7 growers in Tennessee and the Carolinas: The Southeast is one of the wettest zones in the country right now — daily storms and relentless humidity. You have the longest season of the cold-climate group and the most room to push premium plants, but you also take the heaviest fungal pressure. This is the year to commit fully to inorganic media and a top dress, and to give your best plants the drainage they deserve. If you’ve been running bagged soil, a wet year is the reason to switch.
What to do right now
Get potted plants under cover; elevate pots off standing water; tilt to drain after storms.
Top dress now as the fast intervention; repot organic-mix plants into inorganic media at the next opening.
Cut back on fertilizer while media is saturated.
Watch for soft lower leaves, a caudex that gives under thumb pressure, or a sour smell at the soil line.
